Since the 1970s, the Holy Week in Almeria has resurged and has become a major holiday, recognized all over Andalusia and Spain. It is the annual commemoration of the Passion of Jesus Christ celebrated by Catholic religious brotherhoods and fraternities that perform penance processions on the streets. Nowadays, there are more than 20 processions in this city. It has been declared as a "Fiesta of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia". There are 23 brotherhoods (hermandades or cofradías) in Almeria and 2 "Pre-Brotherhoods" (Pre-Hermandades), Camino and Resucitado, that are attempting in these recent years to be part of the "Agrupación de Hermandades y Cofradías de Almería" and become official brotherhoods, when this occurs there will be a total of 25. ==Passion Sunday== *Hermandad y Cofradía de Nazarenos Nuestro Padre Jesús de las Penas en el abandono de sus discípulos, María Santísima del Rosario del Mar en sus Misterios Dolorosos y Santa María Magdalena.
